Christy’s mind zipped through the information she had gathered and landed on the next person she wanted to speak to—Sheryl Wilcox. She knew April in those last days better than anyone. But Christy wasn’t about to call the detectives working the case and ask for her number.

As she turned down the street to the shop, Christy could see cars lined up all the way to the end of the block. The Christmas purse project must be a huge success. She grabbed the last available spot across the street, half a block down.

Reaching under the front seat, she pulled out a phone directory. She flipped over to the Fort Walton section, and searched the Wilcox names. No Sheryl listed. How had the detectives found her? She frowned and shoved the book back under the seat. Maybe her number was unlisted. She grabbed her cell phone and dialed 411, but was told there was no one by that name, not even with an unlisted number.

Strike two.

She got out of the car and crossed the street, glancing through the window of the ice cream shop. She saw several Red Hatters waiting in line for ice cream and smiled. Their little project was perking up the local economy as well.

Christy paused outside their shop to look at its name—I Saw It First—swirled in red cursive across the plate glass window Aunt Bobbie had chosen the perfect name, she thought, and as she opened the door to loud chatter and laughter, she realized just how much she enjoyed being co-owner of this unique shop. Turning trash to treasure, discovering unused “stuff” in people’s attics and making it useful again, had proved to be a rewarding project.

She studied her aunt as Bobbie explained the basics of knitting and crocheting. “You can choose whichever one appeals to you when making your purses,” she finished, her blue eyes twinkling.

Bobbie had taught her family and everyone in Summer Breeze that one must look beyond the flaws and find the promise. Bobbie had done that with her life and set an example for others to do so.

“I’m running late,” a voice called behind Christy.

She turned to see Valerie hurrying through the door, dressed in her trademark denim vest, plaid shirt, and jeans.

“Thought I couldn’t make it, but I had a cancellation for a perm,” Valerie said, slightly breathless. She was a pretty woman, not only because she took pride in styling her blond hair and wearing the latest fashions, but also because she always wore a smile that put a sparkle in her hazel eyes.

“Valerie, will you close the door, please? You’re causing a draft,” Miz B yelled, angling around to see what had disturbed Bobbie’s demonstration.

At least a dozen women crowded around the six-foot-long table that had been set up in the center aisle. Zeffie, perched on a tall stool, wore a rhinestone tiara on her blond head. Upon seeing Christy, she hopped down from the stool and ran to meet her. She motioned for her to bend down so she could whisper.
